call me a socialist...

...but i think that the government should divide that $15 billion dollars among the employees of the car companies. Why should the American public be held ransom by the threats of these greedy bastards? They keep saying "give us money or we'll go bankrupt and lay off all these employees!" Let them go bankrupt. give the money directly to the employees and make those stupid assholes pay for their hubris and lack of forsight as well they should.

blerg!

Seriously?

I think Sarah Palin forgot to talk about energy last night when she wasn't answering any of the questions. Must have been too busy daydreaming about O'Biden.

Darn right!

"We thought it couldn't get more anti-choice and more extreme for women and for health care than George Bush and John McCain. But let's face it -- with Sarah Palin, John McCain has outdone himself. I said, I want a leader who believes This:

For years the Bainbridge Island author and lecturer has been challenging the present economic order."It is an illusion that if you are making money you are creating wealth," he said. "Real wealth is created by investing in the human capital of productive people, the social capital of caring relationships and the natural capital of healthy ecosystems."

Not sure where this is from originally...

*If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."

**Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

*If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

**Name your kids Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

*Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

**Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

*If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

**If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

*If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

**If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

*If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

**If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

*If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.

**If your husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

Separation of church and state?

Watch:

http://www.atlah.org/broadcast/ndnr09-03-08.html

You know, any jackass off the street could post a video on youtube and yell like that for five minutes, and I don't even care if he is telling the truth or not, that kind of preachy argumentative tone he takes is annoying and takes away from any sort of thoughtful argument he may have. Maybe it's just me, but I've never been moved by having ideas forced down my throat like that.

Also, the fact that he lumped homosexuality into drug useage, bestiality, and devil worshiping is completely close-minded and quite frankly, out dated (though considering the source it's not surprising). How very unfortunate to think that there are so many people in this country who have such an old-fashioned way of thinking. He spoke a lot about the 50's and 60's in his video, and I am concerned that maybe he has forgotten that we have now, in fact, enetered the 21st century.

Hey, I think if all of what that man said is true about Obama's upbringing, the fact that Obama was able to rise above from such a rough homelife to end up where he is now is encouraging and shows just how strong and intelligent of a person he is. It's not like his mother was the daughter of a high profile public figure. From what we've been told about the Palin's, Bristol's upbringing was full of unicorns and sunshine. Two separate lives, two separate worlds, two bad decisions, but two completely different situations that are mostly uncomparable.

Women Against Sarah Palin

Yvanka sent me this link and I think it is quite amazing.

Here is their "about me." I could not say it better myself:

"We are not in the habit of criticizing women in the public sphere, as we usually feel we should support our female compatriots with as much encouragement as we can. However, Sarah Palin's record is anti-woman. Feminism is not simply about achieving the power and status typically held by men. It's about protecting and supporting the rights of women of all classes, races, cultures, and beliefs. Palin's record and beliefs do not align with this. She was chosen by John McCain specifically because he believes that American women will vote for any female candidate regardless of their qualifications. He is wrong."

He is SO WRONG.

Does this mean that I live in the dark grey area?

Dear Saucy Cynicism:

I will start the revolution with you. Where do I sign up?

I am mostly happy to be voting for Obama, mainly just because of the fact that he is not an over-the-top, power-and-money-hungry, ancient republican. I truly feel that with Oldie McLameAss and Sarah Pee in charge, we can assure ourselves another four(+?) years of hell on earth. Electing B.O. would guarantee we'd at least be moved out of the firey pits where we are currently burning and into purgatory... waiting out judgement to either screw it up YET AGAIN, or perhaps finally make some progress in this country.

B.O. is in no way my ideal candidate. My ideal candidate would value all as equal, not just give everyone their deserved rights. (There are other reasons, mostly having to do with religion, but that's a whole other blog post.) I do think having a black man, and a woman running this year offers the people of this country a lot of hope for potential progress. But their race and gender in no way automatically make them the best possible candidates. However, right now, I'll take what I can get if it means getting the Bush family out of the white house!

So for the time being, I will continue to consider myself a democrat in the sense that I lean to the left, sometimes very far, sometimes not so far, but mostly that way, and like you said, until this two party system ceases to exist, I will continue to align myself with, and support the lesser of two evils.

---Cat

I live in the Grey Area.

Do not be confused. I will in NO WAY be voting for McLame & Paltry. The idiots who state that Paltry will win the women's votes must have been deprived of oxygen during childbirth, or perhaps at age 22. The only women who will vote for Paltry are women who were voting Republican already. Or who vote the same way as their husband because 'God told them to' or something equally patriarchal. Gross.

On the hallowed day of November 4th, 2008, I will most likely walk into the school where I am registered to cast my saintly ballot, slip into a booth that wouldn't hold up to a strong sneeze, and cast my vote for the big B.O.

Wait-most likely? Oh, you noticed that?

Here is my confession: Deep in my heart and mind, I hold onto the sad knowledge that while it is a truly historical election-a moment that has been coming for 60 years and taken toll on untold lives and hearts-Obama will really be no different.

BLASPHEME!!!!!

I know, I know. My statements are asinine, truly the rantings of a madwoman! Uh, did you see the profile picture here? Me and that guy-we're twins (yes, I'm an ASS for those of you who are dense). The sad resignation that I will feel when I darken in my little dots is explainable. Until this country pulls itself up out of the over fed, over medicated, media stimulated, instantly gratified, celebrity loving, ostrich-like litigious FUNK that we (yes, I'm part of the problem) currently occupy 'change' is only an idea. There is no real competition in this corrupt two party system. Where are the real mavericks, those who are willing to take a chance because they can-they are not merely puppets of an already tired and over worked machine. In case you were wondering, yes, my middle name is Cynicism. Saucy Cynicism has a nice ring, doesn't it?

I wish I was brave enough to start the revolution. But there is a hole in the ground with my name on it.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

No, actually. I'm not kidding you.

Thank you for the inspiration for my first post, N.R.:

"Bristol Palin's pregnancy? Are you kidding me? So you want to talk about what kids do at the age of 17? Barack Obama was snorting blow at 17... Do you want proof? Read HIS book. It's in there. So Bristol gets pregnant... Is that illegal? Snorting blow is. Did you know how old Barack Obama's mom was when she gave birth to little Barry Hussein Obama? 18..."

----------------

Bristol Palin made an unfortunate mistake five months ago. I don't care who you are, or who your parents are, a 17-year-old child is no where near psychologically developed enough to raise a child of their own. Not illegal though, no, but a teenager using drugs generally only negatively affects one person: him or herself. This situation Bristol has put herself into will not only affect her and her family, but this unborn child who has absolutely no control over the situation. If Barack was using drugs at the age of 17, he is obviously not using them now. He has grown, and moved on from that time in his life. A baby is not a situation someone can move on from. Bristol is just very fortunate that her family has vowed their support for her decisions, because otherwise her and her child could be facing a very unfortunate future.

Many other underage mothers in this country are not as lucky as Bristol.

It is unfortunate, but true, yes, that kids these days are having sex at an earlier age than ever before. Without proper education or guidance, children are oftentimes incapable of making choices to utilize contraceptive methods or even to abstain from having sex altogether. Many parents out there are scared of the implications of sex education in school, for fear that their children will, what? That they will then partake in the act that they already see so graphically portrayed by the media daily? In 2006, Sarah Palin stated, "explicit sex-ed programs will not fund my support." It seems to me that Sarah P. would rather her children be educated by movies and television, which generally support risky teenage sexual behavior.

And where exactly has that gotten her?

Did McCain know about this situation before he made this asinine decision to include her as his partner in crime? It would be very hard for me to stand behind a woman who has so much to say about her values and stances on these issues, yet she cannot even provide her own daughter with the knowledge or tools to prevent a situation like this from happening. The fact that Palin cannot even control her own children does not stand in favor of her being a great leader for our nation. If you cannot educate, help, and lead one of the most important people in your life, how would it ever be possible to do those things for a country?

An open letter to Sarah Palin.

Dear Sarah Palin,

Congratulations on rising from relative obscurity to the public spotlight in a span of merely five days! You've gone from the gun-totin' private-investigator-hirin' sweetheart of the Land of the Midnight Sun to the gun-totin' private-investigator-hirin' sweetheart of the entire Republican Party in record time!

I hear that Bristol, your 17-year-old daughter is pregnant out of wedlock. Poor thing. Happens to the best of us. It's unfortunate that the timing is such that last week, she could have chosen whether or not to keep her baby on a local stage rather than a nation--

Oh, that's right. Your political views would forbid your child to pursue that choice. I very much hope that your daughter feels the same way that you do, and that you're not forcing her to keep this baby because of your politics. But that's between you and your daughter - it's not any of my business. Though I will say that it's lucky that this baby will be born (in the national spotlight!) into a family that has the means (and political pressure!) to love and cherish it.

There are lots of babies born whose mamas don't have that ability - either they aren't ready to be an effective parent, or there's another factor, like drugs, or an abusive situation, or a simple financial inability to support and care for a baby as it deserves.

A given woman’s ability to provide a nurturing environment to a child can fluctuate over time depending on the woman’s age, education, and income, as well as the presence of a father in the child’s life, whether the pregnancy is wanted, and any drug or alcohol abuse both in utero and after the birth. Consequently, legalized abortion provides a woman the opportunity to delay childbearing if the current conditions are suboptimal. (Donohoe & Levitt)

When those babies are born, those babies who aren't loved and cherished as Bristol's child will be, they can have a harder time navigating the murky waters of society. The truly lucky ones find their way through the system - they are the success stories. But the other babies? The babies born in suboptimal conditions? They are the children of the night - the children who have a high probability to turning to crime in the formative late-teenage years.

Have you ever read Donohue and Levitt's May '01 article on the statistical connection between legalized abortion and crime rates, Sarah? It's good old indesputible math. Here's a selection from the abstract.

We offer evidence that legalized abortion has contributed significantly to recent crime reductions. Crime began to fall roughly eighteen years after abortion legalization. The five states that allowed abortion in 1970 experienced declines earlier than the rest of the nation, which legalized in 1973 with Roe v. Wade. States with high abortion rates in the 1970s and 1980s experienced greater crime reductions in the 1990s. In high abortion states, only arrests of those born after abortion legalization fall relative to low abortion states. Legalized abortion appears to account for as much as 50 percent of the recent drop in crime.

Good LORD.

I can't reconcile your logic, there, Sarah... you want to equip everyone with guns against the army of unwanted babies who become criminals who will surge in numbers approximately eighteen years beyond the outlawing of abortion? Is that the plan? Because you know that these criminals-in-training will have access to guns, too.

Not a particularly long-term thought process, there. It sounds to me that if you get your way, we'll be building more jails.

Best of luck.

Yvanka
